Description

Edit

Zambujal is a small locality in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, in the Coimbra district. Its name derives from zambujeiro, the Portuguese word for the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris), with the suffix -al indicating a place covered with or defined by such trees. Wild olive trees are common on limestone terrain across the Mediterranean and Atlantic zones of Iberia.

The locality sits in the transition zone between the Serra de Sicó and the Mondego basin, in a landscape of limestone scrub, olive groves, and cereal fields typical of this part of the Coimbra district. The wild olive is an ancestor of the cultivated olive and persists on the drier, stonier hillsides.

On the Camino Português, Zambujal falls in the section between Rabaçal and Conimbriga, where the route crosses the limestone plateau before descending toward the Roman ruins.
