Description
Vilanova de Anha is a civil parish in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, situated on the south bank of the Lima estuary at the point where the river broadens into tidal flats before meeting the Atlantic. The parish has a traditional agricultural and fishing character.
The principal landmark is the Torre de Anha, a medieval granite tower house that survives in the upper part of the parish, one of several fortified tower residences that once dotted the lower Lima valley as expressions of noble power in the medieval Minho. The estuary below offers wide water views across the tidal flats and sandbanks of the Lima mouth.
For pilgrims on the coastal Camino Português, Vilanova de Anha lies on the southern approach to Viana do Castelo, where the route follows the Lima estuary before crossing into the city.
