Description
Vila Nova da Barquinha is a town and municipality in the Santarém district, situated on the south bank of the Tagus at the point where the Zêzere river joins from the north. The name, meaning New Town of the Small Boat, reflects the crossing and ferry traditions associated with this river junction. Directly opposite, on the north bank of the Tagus, is the village of Constância, known for its association with the poet Luís de Camões.
The confluence of the Tagus and Zêzere creates a distinctive landscape of broad water surfaces, sandy banks, and the meeting of two river systems. The area is part of the Tagus International Natural Park zone and retains riverside vegetation and wetland habitats.
The Camino Português passes through or near Vila Nova da Barquinha on the approach to Tomar, one of the route’s major historic stages.
