Description

Edit

Vila de Cucujães is a town and parish in the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis, in the Aveiro district. It is most notable for the presence of a Salesian school and seminary, the Escola Salesiana de Cucujães, founded in the late nineteenth century. This institution became an important center of Catholic education and missionary formation in Portugal, producing clergy and lay educators who worked both domestically and in Portuguese-speaking Africa and Asia.

The Salesian complex is the dominant landmark of the settlement, comprising a large institutional building, chapel, and surrounding grounds set within the forested terrain of the Oliveira de Azeméis municipality. The surrounding landscape is characterized by eucalyptus and pine woodland on the hillsides, with the institution occupying a substantial footprint in a clearing.

Vila de Cucujães is a stop on the Camino Português, and the presence of the Salesian institution gives the town a distinctive identity among the smaller villages on this stretch of the route.
