Description

Edit

Tol is a small locality in the municipality of Castropol, in Asturias, situated in the western Asturian terrain near the Eo river estuary on the Galician border. The name Tol is considered to be of pre-Roman or Celtic origin, one of the archaic toponyms of the region that predate Romanisation and preserve traces of the early Atlantic Celtic languages spoken in this part of Iberia.

The setting is the typical green enclosed valley terrain of western Asturias, with pasture, mixed woodland, and the stone farmhouses of traditional settlement. The proximity to the Eo estuary and the Galician border gives the locality a transitional geographic identity.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Tol is a waypoint in the final Asturian stages before the crossing into Galicia at Ribadeo.
