Descripción
Sobrado dos Monxes is a municipality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, named for the Monasterio de Santa María de Sobrado, a Cistercian monastery of extraordinary historical and architectural significance. The monastery was founded in the tenth century, flourished as one of the most important Cistercian foundations in Iberia, and has been continuously inhabited by Cistercian monks since its restoration in the twentieth century.
The monastery church is one of the largest in Galicia, a Baroque structure of imposing scale with a dramatic west front, and the complex also retains elements from the Romanesque and Gothic periods. The monks operate a pilgrim hostel and the monastery has been a recognised stop on the Camino routes since the medieval period.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte and the merged Norte-Primitivo route, Sobrado dos Monxes is one of the most spiritually significant overnight stops on the Galician section, combining the monastic atmosphere with full pilgrim services.
