Description
Santa María de Lago is a locality in the municipality of Grandas de Salime, in Asturias, on the Camino Primitivo route descending toward the Navia river valley. The village is notable for the church of Santa María de Lago, a building with pre-Romanesque origins that is one of the more significant early medieval ecclesiastical sites on the western Asturian Primitivo.
The name records both the Marian dedication and the presence of a small lake or pool near the settlement, a topographic feature typical of the poorly drained terrain on the mountain approach. The elevated position gives the village views across the valley toward the Galician hills to the west.
