Descripción
San Lázaro de Paniceres is a locality on the western outskirts of Oviedo, in Asturias, along the historic road toward Grado on the Camino Primitivo. The name preserves the memory of a medieval leprosarium dedicated to Saint Lazarus, the patron of lepers, established here to care for sick pilgrims and travellers leaving the city.
Medieval hospitals for lepers were commonly placed at town exits, ensuring the sick received care while remaining at a distance from the urban population. The Saint Lazarus dedication is among the most common for such institutions across medieval Europe.
For pilgrims on the Camino Primitivo, San Lázaro de Paniceres marks the beginning of the route proper after departing Oviedo, transitioning from the urban environment to the first rural terrain heading westward.
