Descripción
San Juan de Ortega is a monastic complex in the municipality of Barrios de Colina, Burgos, situated in the Montes de Oca forest on the Camino Frances. The monastery was founded by Saint John of Ortega in the twelfth century as a pilgrim hospice to support travellers crossing the dangerous Oca mountains, complementing the work of his mentor Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
The Romanesque church retains a capital of the Annunciation whose carved scene catches the light of the setting sun on the spring and autumn equinoxes, illuminating the scene in a documented optical event. The monastery is surrounded by dense oak woodland and has a remote, contemplative character far from any village.
For pilgrims, San Juan de Ortega is one of the most atmospheric monastery stops on the Camino Frances, its isolation in deep forest giving it a quality distinct from the town monasteries of the route.
