Description
San Amaro is a small locality in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, situated in the rural corridor between Pontevedra city and the spa town of Caldas de Reis. The name is dedicated to Saint Amaro, a medieval saint associated with healing and pilgrimage who features in Galician popular devotion.
The settlement occupies the agricultural terrain typical of inner Galicia: stone-built farmhouses, vine-covered stone walls, maize plots, and the occasional cruceiro at a lane junction. Traditional Galician hórreo granaries, raised on granite staddle legs with cross-finial gable ends, are a recurring visual element of the local landscape.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, San Amaro is a representative example of the quiet rural stretches that alternate with urban stages on the route through Galicia.
