Descripción
Real Hospital de Santiago de Montouto is a ruined medieval pilgrim hospital on the Camino Primitivo in the province of Lugo, Galicia, situated at a mountain pass on the route between A Fonsagrada and the lower Lugo valleys. The hospital was established under the patronage of the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela and bore the royal designation, indicating official support from the ecclesiastical authorities of Santiago.
The ruins are among the more historically significant hospital remains on the Camino Primitivo, representing the organized infrastructure maintained by the Santiago chapter to support pilgrims on one of the original and most demanding Camino routes. The pass position made the hospital strategically important for travellers crossing the mountain terrain.
For pilgrims today, the ruins are a visible reminder of the medieval hospitaller network and the long institutional history behind the pilgrimage tradition.
