Description

Edit

Puente de Villarente is a locality in the municipality of Villaturiel, León, situated at the crossing of the Porma river on the Camino Frances. The medieval bridge here, with its long sequence of arches spanning the wide Porma, is one of the notable historic bridges of the León section and marks the crossing from the flat plain into the more enclosed river valley terrain approaching the city.

The village has a functional character with services for pilgrims at the bridge crossing. The Porma river is one of the main tributaries of the Esla on this section, and the bridge has been an important crossing point on the road network since the medieval period.

For pilgrims, the bridge crossing at Villarente marks the clear transition from the Meseta plain to the León valley approach, the river providing a visible boundary between two distinct landscape characters.
