Description
Pola de Siero is the capital of the municipality of Siero, in Asturias, situated in the inland valley of the Nora river between Gijón and Oviedo. The town has a traditional market character, with a weekly market held since medieval times and a compact historic centre around the church of Santa María del Mercado.
The municipality of Siero is one of the most populated in Asturias outside the main cities, reflecting its position in the central Asturian corridor between the coast and the capital Oviedo. Despite its suburban connections to both Gijón and Oviedo, Pola de Siero retains a distinct market town identity.
Pilgrims taking the inland variant of the Camino del Norte through Pola de Siero are on the route that connects Gijón with Oviedo before heading westward along the Camino Primitivo or continuing on the Norte toward Avilés.
