Outeiro da Cotovia

Outeiro da Cotovia is a small locality in the municipality of Alvaiázere, in the Leiria district. Its name means hill of the skylark, combining outeiro, a small rounded hill, with cotovia, the Portuguese word for the skylark, a bird associated with open scrubland and upland plateau terrain.

The settlement sits on elevated terrain on the descent from the Serra de Aire toward the Alvaiázere basin, in a landscape of limestone scrub, pine forest, and the scattered farmsteads typical of this part of the Leiria interior. The views from the hilltop extend across the forested ridges to the north and west.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Outeiro da Cotovia is a waypoint on the long descent from the serra plateau toward Alvaiázere, where the route transitions from exposed upland terrain to the more sheltered valley approaches.
