Description

Edit

O Marco das Pías is a locality at the boundary between the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña, in Galicia, on the Camino route south of Baamonde. The name means the boundary stone of the stone basins, referring to a carved granite marker that indicated the provincial or municipal boundary at this point. Marco stones of this type are common throughout Galicia, where carved granite markers with simple cross or armorial carvings once indicated territory limits.

The crossing from the Lugo province into A Coruña is a notable moment on the inland Camino route, representing the final major provincial transition before the route arrives at Santiago de Compostela. The boundary marker stone itself is the defining feature of the locality.
