O Leboreiro

O Leboreiro is a small locality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between the Lugo border and Melide. The hamlet has exceptional medieval character, retaining the Romanesque church of Santa María and a thirteenth-century stone bridge that together constitute one of the more intact medieval pilgrimage ensembles on the Galician Camino Frances.

The church of Santa María has a distinctive tympanum carving and retains the simple, austere quality of the Galician Romanesque school. The accompanying bridge, with its low arches over the stream, is a good example of the functional medieval bridge building found throughout the Galician pilgrimage corridor.

For pilgrims, O Leboreiro provides one of the more evocative medieval encounters on this stage, the combination of church, bridge, and compact stone hamlet giving a clear sense of the medieval pilgrimage infrastructure.
