Description

Edit

O Acebo is a locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, at the high mountain pass that marks the administrative boundary between Asturias and Galicia on the Camino Primitivo. The name is the Galician word for holly, acebo, indicating that holly woodland once covered this pass terrain, a characteristic Atlantic forest species in the humid border zone.

The pass at O Acebo is one of the most symbolically significant points on the Camino Primitivo: the moment of crossing from Asturias into Galicia represents a major threshold for pilgrims who have crossed the entire Asturian sierra. The exposed mountain terrain, the low vegetation, and the wide views back over the crossed sierra give the crossing a distinctive atmosphere.

Beyond the pass, the route descends into the enclosed green valleys of the Lugo interior on the final Galician stages toward Santiago de Compostela.
