Montefurado

Montefurado is a small locality in the municipality of Grandas de Salime, in Asturias, on the Camino Primitivo route descending from El Puerto del Palo toward Grandas de Salime. The name means perforated mountain or holed hill, indicating a rock formation pierced by a natural tunnel, cave, or channel that gave the locality its distinctive identity.

The surrounding terrain is the dramatic descent from the highest point of the Primitivo, with wide mountain views gradually giving way to the enclosed valley terrain of the Navia river corridor below. The rock formation suggested by the name is consistent with the limestone and schist geology of this section of the western Asturian sierra.
