Description
Lugo is the capital of the province of the same name in Galicia, Spain, situated on the Miño river. The city is defined above all by its Roman wall, the Muralla de Lugo, completed in the late third or early fourth century AD, which survives intact around the entire perimeter of the historic centre and is the only complete Roman defensive wall in the world. The wall, with its seventy-one towers and walk path along its 2.2-kilometre circuit, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
The historic centre within the walls retains the Catedral de Santa María de Lugo, a Romanesque-Gothic structure with a notable ambulatory and the Capilla de la Virgen de los Ojos Grandes. The Roman thermal baths, the Forum museum, and the regular urban grid of the Roman foundation are still traceable in the street pattern.
For pilgrims on the Camino Primitivo and those arriving from the Norte, Lugo is one of the most historically significant cities on any Camino route, combining Roman, medieval, and modern Galician culture in a compact walled urban setting.
