Description
Logroño is the capital of the La Rioja autonomous community in northern Spain, situated on the Ebro river at the traditional border between Navarra and Castile. The city is the gateway to the Rioja wine country and the largest urban centre on the Camino Frances between Pamplona and Burgos.
The Puente de Piedra, a stone bridge of multiple arches spanning the Ebro, provides the classic Camino entry into the old town. The cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda has twin Baroque towers flanking its facade. The Calle Laurel in the old town is one of Spain’s most celebrated tapas streets, lined with pintxos bars serving regional food and wine.
For pilgrims, Logroño is a major urban encounter with the cultural capital of La Rioja, full services, and the first deep encounter with Rioja wine culture that will characterize the next several days of walking.
