La Mortera

La Mortera is a small locality in the municipality of Allande, in Asturias, on the elevated mountain terrain of the Camino Primitivo. The name may derive from mortera, a Asturian toponym related to a stone basin, bowl-shaped terrain, or a specific rock formation.

The surrounding terrain is the high western Asturian sierra, with open upland heath, mountain pasture, and the exposed ridge character typical of the demanding high stage between Tineo and Pola de Allande. For pilgrims, La Mortera is a waypoint in the most physically demanding section of the entire Camino Primitivo.
