Description

Edit

Iseca Vieja is a small locality in the municipality of Liendo, in Cantabria, situated on the terrain approaching the Asón estuary on the western approach to Laredo. The name translates roughly as Old Iseca, suggesting that a newer counterpart settlement exists nearby.

The locality sits in the transition zone between the Cantabrian interior hills and the estuarine marshland of the Asón river mouth. The approach to the Laredo crossing on this route takes pilgrims through coastal wetland terrain, with the salt marshes, dunes, and the estuary mouth defining the landscape.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Iseca Vieja marks the approach to the ferry crossing at Laredo or the longer inland route around the Asón estuary.
