Description

Edit

Hospital is a small locality in the municipality of Dumbría, in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. The name directly records the former presence of a pilgrim hospital or hospice at this location on the Camino de Fisterra route, one of the network of medieval hospitaller establishments that provided shelter, food, and medical care to pilgrims and travellers on the Jacobean roads.

Though no significant hospital structure survives today, the toponym is a direct linguistic trace of the medieval pilgrimage infrastructure that served this route. The locality sits on the descent toward the Atlantic coast, in the terrain between the plateau and the Cee estuary.

For pilgrims on the modern Fisterra route, Hospital is a reminder that the walk to the Atlantic was a recognised medieval pilgrimage extension, with its own support network.
