Descripción
Grañon is a small municipality in La Rioja, situated on the Camino Frances as the last village before the border with Castilla y León. The town occupies a slight elevation above the surrounding wheat plain, and the church of San Juan Bautista, with its fifteenth-century tower, provides the main visual landmark from a distance.
The surrounding landscape is the open cereal plain that typifies this section of the route, with wide skies and low rolling terrain characteristic of the La Rioja-Castilla frontier. The village has a medieval character and hosts pilgrims in the church attic, one of the more unusual albergue arrangements on the route.
For pilgrims, Grañon marks the symbolic boundary between La Rioja and the long Meseta stage through Castilla y León, a transition that many experienced walkers consider one of the most significant on the journey.
