Description

Cruz de Ferro is a waypoint on the Camino Frances in the province of León, situated at approximately 1,505 metres on the ridge of the Montes de León, making it the highest point of the Camino Frances. The site consists of a simple iron cross mounted on a tall oak pole, surrounded by an enormous cairn of stones deposited by pilgrims over centuries.

The tradition of carrying a stone from home and leaving it at the cross dates to pre-Christian times and represents the symbolic laying down of a burden or offering. The cairn has grown to enormous proportions, with hundreds of thousands of stones, tokens, messages, and objects accumulated over the years.

For pilgrims, the Cruz de Ferro is one of the most emotionally significant moments of the Camino Frances, the combination of altitude, exposure, and the visible weight of centuries of pilgrimage devotion creating an experience unlike any other on the route.
