Description
Compostilla is a locality in the municipality of Ponferrada, León, on the western edge of the city on the Camino Frances as it exits toward Cacabelos. The area is on the transition between the urban industrial fringe of Ponferrada and the first vineyard and orchard terrain of the Bierzo wine country.
The Bierzo wine appellation begins to define the landscape here, with Mencía grape vines on the slopes and the characteristic red clay soil of the region becoming visible. Pear, apple, and chestnut orchards also dot the valley sides.
For pilgrims, Compostilla marks the exit from the large city and the beginning of the pleasant wine and orchard country that characterises the stages toward Villafranca del Bierzo.
