Description

Edit

Combarro is a coastal village in the municipality of Poio, Pontevedra, Galicia, designated as one of the Plus Beaux Villages of Spain and recognised as an exceptional example of traditional Galician fishing village architecture. The village occupies a rocky promontory on the Pontevedra ría, its historic quarter compressed between the granite waterfront and the hillside behind.

The defining visual features of Combarro are the cruceiros, the wayside crosses that line the waterfront path and rise from the rocks at the sea edge, and the exceptional density of hórreo granaries that crowd the hillside above the harbour. The number and proximity of these traditional stone granaries, raised on cylindrical staddle stones and topped with stone crosses, is unique in Galicia and gives the village its unmistakeable architectural silhouette.

For pilgrims on the Camino Espiritual, Combarro is both a visual and spiritual landmark, its crosses and granaries compressed into a single unforgettable waterfront scene.
