Description
Cobreces is a locality in the municipality of Alfoz de Lloredo, in Cantabria, situated on the coastal clifftop above the Bay of Biscay. The village is home to the Abadía de Santa María de Cobreces, a Cistercian Trappist monastery founded in 1904 by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Solesmes in France. The monastic community operates a working farm and receives guests in its guesthouse, continuing the tradition of monastic hospitality.
The abbey buildings and church occupy a prominent position on the coastal clifftop, with wide views over the Bay of Biscay. The surrounding landscape is the exposed Cantabrian coastal terrain of gorse, heather, and green meadow, with the sea visible to the north.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Cobreces is a significant religious waypoint and one of the few active monastic communities directly on the route between Santander and Llanes.
