Description

Edit

Cereijeira is a small locality in the municipality of Grandas de Salime, in Asturias, on the Camino Primitivo route between Grandas de Salime and the Galician border crossing at the Acebo pass. The name derives from cerdeira or cereijeira, the Galician-Asturian word for cherry tree, indicating that cherry trees once defined this terrain or that a notable cherry grove marked the site.

The locality occupies the ascending terrain above Grandas de Salime, where the route climbs toward the pass that marks the boundary between Asturias and Galicia. The cherry tree toponym is fitting for the sheltered upper valley terrain where fruit trees can persist before the exposed alpine zone of the pass.

For pilgrims, Cereijeira is one of the last Asturian localities before the symbolic crossing into Galicia, carrying the emotional charge of the final regional transition on the Camino Primitivo.
