Description
Casais da Granja is a small locality in the municipality of Ansião, in the Leiria district. Its name combines casais, meaning homestead clusters, with granja, meaning a farm or grange, often associated with a monastic or estate farm dependency in the medieval period. The toponym suggests a settlement that developed around or in association with a larger agricultural operation.
The locality sits in the forested terrain between the Ansião basin and the Coimbra district, in a landscape of pine, eucalyptus, and mixed scrub with small cultivated clearings. The terrain is beginning to open slightly as the route approaches the Coimbra plain.
On the Camino Português, Casais da Granja falls in the rural section between Ansião and Rabaçal, where the route passes through the quiet forested interior before descending toward the Mondego basin.
