Description
Camargo is a municipality in Cantabria immediately south of Santander, with Muriedas as its principal urban nucleus. The municipality developed as an industrial and residential extension of the Santander metropolitan area, with significant pharmaceutical, food, and manufacturing industry established in its territory across the twentieth century.
The Camargo valley, drained by the Pas river system, provides the geographic context for the municipality. Despite its largely modern urban character, some older village cores with traditional Cantabrian stone farmhouses persist within the municipal territory.
Pilgrims on the Camino del Norte pass through the Camargo-Muriedas area on the inland southern route linking the Santander estuary approaches with the westward continuation of the route toward Santillana del Mar.
