Description
Calvinos is a small locality in the municipality of Tomar, in the Santarém district, situated on the ascending hillside terrain between Tomar and the Serra de Aire plateau. The landscape is forested, with pine and eucalyptus woodland covering the steeper slopes and small agricultural clearings occupying the gentler terrain.
The name may derive from a personal name or from the Latin calvus, meaning bare or bald, sometimes applied to exposed hilltops or clearings. The settlement is small and dispersed, characteristic of the rural homestead pattern of this part of central Portugal.
On the Camino Português, Calvinos is one of several small localities on the long forested ascent north of Tomar, a section of the route that prepares pilgrims for the more open limestone terrain of the Serra de Aire.
