Description

Edit

Azinhaga is a civil parish in the municipality of Golegã, in the Santarém district. The name means narrow lane or enclosed path, describing the type of sunken track typical of Portuguese agricultural landscapes. The village is known as the birthplace of José Saramago, the Nobel Prize-winning novelist, and a small museum in the village is dedicated to his life and work.

The settlement occupies the edge of the Tagus floodplain, with the characteristic white-rendered houses and traditional street pattern of a Ribatejo agricultural village. Surrounding the village are fields and pasture used for horse breeding, for which the Golegã area is famous, particularly the Lusitano breed.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Azinhaga is a point of literary and cultural interest on the route through the Ribatejo plain.
