Description

Edit

Azambuja is a town and municipality in the Lisbon district, situated in the Tagus valley at the point where the broad alluvial plain begins to narrow and the terrain on either side rises toward the interior. The town serves as a market and service centre for the surrounding agricultural municipalities and has a traditional Ribatejo character.

The area is known for its involvement in the wine and olive oil production of the Lisboa wine region, and the transition in landscape character at Azambuja, from flat floodplain to undulating interior terrain, gives the town a pivotal geographic position.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Azambuja marks the end of the long flat Tagus plain section and the beginning of the more varied landscape of the Ribatejo interior approaching Santarém.
