Description
Ayegui is a municipality in Navarra adjacent to Estella, situated below the Monastery of Irache on the Camino Frances. The village is most widely known for the Bodegas Irache winery, which maintains a public wine fountain installed beside the Camino path, dispensing free red wine and water to pilgrims from two taps set into the winery wall.
The wine fountain, established in the late twentieth century, has become one of the most photographed and talked-about features of the Camino Frances, drawing pilgrims who often stop specifically to taste the Navarrese wine.
For pilgrims, Ayegui is the moment of levity on a demanding route, the wine fountain a communal gathering point before the climb toward Los Arcos and the open Rioja approach.
