Alvaiázere

Alvaiázere is a town and municipality in the Leiria district of central Portugal, situated in the forested hill country between the Serra de Aire plateau and the Coimbra district border. The town serves as a market and service centre for the surrounding rural municipalities, with a traditional weekly market that remains active.

The landscape around the town combines pine and eucalyptus forest on the steeper slopes with smallholder cultivation in the valley bottoms. The surrounding ridges give the area a contained, enclosed quality compared to the open plateau terrain to the south.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Alvaiázere is a significant rest stop after the long descent from the Serra de Aire, offering services before the route continues northward through the Leiria interior toward Coimbra.
