Description

Edit

A Guarda (La Guardia in Spanish) is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Minho river, directly across the water from Caminha in Portugal. The town is a working fishing port with a fleet exploiting the rich waters of the Minho estuary and the adjacent Atlantic.

The dominant landmark is Monte Santa Trega, a hill above the town that is crowned by a large reconstructed Iron Age Castro site, one of the most extensively excavated and reconstructed Celtic settlements in Galicia. The circular stone hut foundations and enclosing walls of the castro have been partially rebuilt and are open to visitors, offering sweeping views over the Minho mouth and the Atlantic coast.

For pilgrims arriving by ferry from Caminha, A Guarda is the point of entry into Galicia on the coastal Camino variant.
