Description

Edit

A Calzada is a small locality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between Arzúa and O Pedrouzo. The name means the causeway or paved road, a toponym recording the presence of a section of ancient Roman road paving that historically defined or underlies this stretch of the route.

Calzada toponyms on the Camino routes are reminders of the Roman infrastructure that preceded the medieval pilgrimage corridor, the ancient road network providing the physical basis on which the Camino developed over centuries.

The hamlet occupies the enclosed green terrain typical of the final A Coruña stages, the path here passing through the oak and eucalyptus woodland that lines much of the penultimate stage.
