Villamayor del Rio

Villamayor del Río is a small municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated on the Camino Frances between Castildelgado and Belorado. The village is positioned on the Relachigo river, a minor watercourse on the flat plain, and has a compact stone character typical of Castilian village architecture.

The surrounding landscape is the wide Burgos cereal plain, with the Oca mountain range becoming increasingly visible to the south as the route approaches Belorado. The open terrain and wide sky of this section are characteristic of the Castilian Meseta experience that begins in earnest after La Rioja.

For pilgrims, Villamayor del Río is a quiet passage point before Belorado, the first significant service town in Burgos province.
