Description

Edit

Vila Nova de Cerveira is a town and municipality in the Viana do Castelo district, situated on the Portuguese bank of the Minho river opposite the Galician town of Goián. The town is dominated by its medieval castle, a fourteenth-century fortification that has been converted into a pousada and arts residency, with its original walls, towers, and gatehouse largely intact enclosing a small village within.

The town is known internationally for its biennial art exhibition, which takes place within the castle walls and in the surrounding streets, giving it a cultural identity unusual for a small border municipality. The Minho crossing here by ferry connects Vila Nova de Cerveira to Galicia, and the river setting is wide and luminous at this point.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português inland route along the Minho, Vila Nova de Cerveira is a major waypoint with services and one of the more architecturally interesting stops between Caminha and Valença.
