Description

Edit

Vila Nova da Rainha is a civil parish in the municipality of Azambuja, in the Lisbon district, situated on the eastern bank of the Tagus between Carregado and Azambuja. The name, meaning New Town of the Queen, suggests a royal or noble foundation, though the locality today is a modest agricultural settlement.

The surrounding terrain is the flat Tagus plain, where intensive cultivation of vegetables, cereals, and fodder crops occupies the alluvial soils. The river corridor is close and its presence influences both the landscape and the seasonal flooding patterns that shape land use here.

The Camino Português passes through or near Vila Nova da Rainha on the long riverside section of the route through the Ribatejo, a stretch characterised by its flatness, its wide skies, and the measured rhythm of the river alongside.
