Description

Edit

Viana is a municipality in Navarra, the last significant town on the Camino Frances before the border with La Rioja. The town was founded in 1219 by King Sancho VII and served as a frontier stronghold between Navarra and Castile, retaining substantial medieval walls and a historic centre of notable quality.

The ruined church of San Pedro, with its elaborate Gothic-Plateresque portal standing among roofless walls open to the sky, is one of the more striking architectural encounters on the final Navarrese stages. Viana is also the burial place of Cesare Borgia, the notorious son of Pope Alexander VI, who died in battle near the town in 1507.

For pilgrims, Viana provides full services and the historical encounter with two exceptional monuments before the Logroño crossing and the beginning of the La Rioja wine route.
