Description

Edit

Vendas is a small locality in the Leiria district, in the municipality of Alvaiázere or the adjacent Ansião area. The name means sales or market stalls, but in a rural road context typically refers to a venda, a wayside inn or tavern that served travellers along the main roads. Such establishments were the predecessors of the modern service stop, providing food, drink, and sometimes lodging.

Settlements named Vendas across Portugal often developed at natural stopping points on old roads, where a hill pass, a valley crossing, or simply a long distance from the nearest town made a rest stop necessary. The locality preserves this roadside service memory in its toponym.

On the Camino Português, Vendas falls in the rural section between Alvaiázere and Ansião, in the forested interior of the Leiria district.
