Descripción
São João da Azenha is a small parish in the municipality of Águeda, in the Aveiro district. Its name combines the patron saint John with ‘azenha,’ the Portuguese term for a traditional watermill driven by a horizontal wheel, indicating that a mill once operated on a watercourse near the settlement.
The village sits on low-lying terrain at the transition zone between the Bairrada plain and the slightly more undulating countryside approaching the Águeda river valley. The landscape is predominantly agricultural, with small holdings, orchards, and remnant stream-side vegetation marking the courses of local watercourses.
On the Camino Português, São João da Azenha represents one of several named parishes that pilgrims pass through on the approach to Águeda, giving texture to what might otherwise appear a featureless rural corridor.
