Description

Edit

Conimbriga is the most extensively excavated and best-preserved Roman city in Portugal, and one of the most significant Roman archaeological sites on the Iberian Peninsula. Located in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, in the Coimbra district, the site was a substantial urban centre of the Roman province of Lusitania, with occupation from the Iron Age through to the early medieval period.

The excavated remains include elaborate polychrome mosaic floors, hypocaust underfloor heating systems, public baths, a forum, private house foundations, and sections of the late Roman defensive walls built hastily in the third century AD. The Casa dos Repuxos, a wealthy private house with an elaborate mosaic-paved garden and fountain system, is among the most impressive Roman domestic remains in Portugal.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Conimbriga is one of the route’s most significant archaeological detours, and the site museum provides broader context for Roman settlement in this part of central Portugal.
