Description
Noreña is a small municipality in Asturias, situated in the valley terrain between Pola de Siero and Oviedo in the central Asturian corridor. The town is known throughout Asturias and beyond for its chorizo production, with the Feria del Chorizo de Noreña, an annual sausage festival, drawing visitors from across the region.
The town also has a medieval castle, the Castillo de Noreña, which was the site of a significant late medieval conflict in the fifteenth century and retains partial ruins on the hilltop above the town. The castle and the chorizo heritage together give Noreña an identity that belies its modest size.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte inland variant, Noreña is a waypoint in the corridor between Pola de Siero and Oviedo, offering a distinctive gastronomic stop before the capital.
