Descripción
Moissac is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, situated at the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne rivers on the Via Podiensis. The town is defined by the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Moissac, a Benedictine foundation that became one of the most important centres of Romanesque art in medieval Europe.
The south portal of the abbey church, carved in the early twelfth century, contains a tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists and the elders of the Apocalypse. The adjacent cloister with its paired columns and carved capitals is equally exceptional. For pilgrims, Moissac is one of the defining cultural stops of the Via Podiensis.
