Description
Melide is a town and municipality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, situated at the convergence of the Camino del Norte inland variant and the Camino Francés, the two busiest pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The town is nationally famous for pulpo á feira, the Galician boiled octopus served with olive oil, paprika, and sea salt, which is considered the defining local gastronomy of Melide and the surrounding area.
The historic centre has a Romanesque church of San Pedro and several stone structures of medieval origin. The convergence of the two Camino routes brings a significant volume of pilgrims through Melide, making it one of the busiest waypoints on any Camino in the final stages before Santiago.
For pilgrims, Melide marks approximately fifty kilometres from Santiago, and the pulpo is both a gastronomic experience and an informal tradition of the final stretch.
