Maia

Maia is a municipality in the Porto district, forming part of the greater Porto metropolitan area north of the city. It has a predominantly urban and suburban character, with significant industrial estates, commercial infrastructure, and residential development across its territory. The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, which serves Porto, is located within the Maia municipality.

Despite its largely modern fabric, Maia retains some older parish cores with traditional architecture and green spaces, and has invested in pedestrian infrastructure that supports the Camino Português route.

For pilgrims, Maia represents a sustained urban passage through the Porto metropolitan area before the route opens toward the more rural terrain of the Braga district.
