Description
Lijó is a parish in the municipality of Barcelos, in the Braga district. It occupies the rural agricultural landscape north of Barcelos town, where the Minho’s characteristic smallholder farming system of maize, vine, and kale continues in a mosaic of granite-walled plots.
The settlement has a traditional layout around its parish church, with stone farmhouses and outbuildings forming a compact core. Vine pergolas on granite posts are a common sight along field boundaries, and the surrounding countryside has the well-watered green quality typical of the lower Minho.
Lijó lies on the Camino Português between Barcelos and Portela de Tamel, a section where pilgrims re-enter open agricultural countryside after the town.
